COMING TUESDAY, MAY 28, 2024

It's been a while since I published a major book title. I've honestly been trying to get movie deals done, and I'm still working on that. There are far too many Black books that would make some great films, including several of my titles. So, I'm determined to make that happen. I eventually want us all to be able to see what we fell in love with reading.

In the meantime, I'm a much older person now than I was when I first started writing Flyy Girl as a 19-year-old sophomore at the University of Pittsburgh in 1989. It was a young, urban book that opened up the market for hundreds of new writers, and millions of new readers. And it made me a household name in Black literature.

Now I'm a bit older, and I know much more about the details of adult life to write about it, starting this new book Control—a psychological thriller on the hot topics of mental health and our interpersonal relationships.

The Godfather of 1990s Urban Fiction Returns

Omar Tyree, a celebrated and award-winning author, journalist, lecturer, poet, screenwriter, songwriter, and filmmaker from Philadelphia, was the youngest star of the 1990s Black Literature movement. A New York Times bestseller, an NAACP Image Award winner, and a Phillis Wheatley Literary Prize recipient for his body of work as the proclaimed “Godfather of Urban Fiction”—Tyree now discusses “The State of Black Writing,” his own career, and his outlook for the future.

Fresh off the HBCU campus of Howard University—after completing his first two undergrad years at the University of Pittsburgh—Tyree exploded on the literary scene in October of 1992. His literary work caught fire and eventually inspired millions of new readers and thousands of new writers with classic urban fiction that included Flyy Girl, A Do Right Man, Single Mom, Sweet St. Louis, For the Love of Money, Just Say No! Leslie, Diary of a Groupie, What They Want, The Last Street Novel, and Pecking Order, along with Capital City, College Boy, One Crazy Night and Cold Blooded in his Urban Griot series.

Tyree has also published works of nonfiction, children and young adult, poetry, business, international thrillers, short stories and autobiographies, including Mayor For Life: The Incredible Story of Marion Barry Jr.—the embattled late mayor of Washington, DC. Tyree will discuss his beginnings, struggles, victories, failures, pros and cons of present-day writing and what’s next before answering questions from the audience.

Film and television are where the storytelling skills of Omar Tyree first began. He was not a book reader as a child, he was a typical active boy playing sports in the streets, playgrounds, school yards, and recreational centers of West Philadelphia, with career aspirations of playing professional football.

However, as the firstborn grandson of a mother—the oldest of eight, and a father—the oldest of four—Tyree found himself right in the middle of aunts, uncles, and cousins, who surrounded him in the extended family / “baby boom” culture of the 1970s. Hence, there were plenty of adult stories to be told that were all around him, as opposed to the smaller, child-friendly setting of a nuclear family.

By the time he and his mother moved to Mt. Airy, where he gained a West Philadelphia-born and raised stepfather, followed by two younger brothers, Tyree was already a movie-loving, mimicking machine with a gifted memory for details.

“In West Philly, I used to walk up Lancaster Avenue from The Bottom on 38th Street with my uncles, Andre and Montaque, and we’d watch triple features of Kung Fu movies at the Capital Centre at 52nd and Girard,” Tyree explains. “I would watch all three movies with no problem and memorize the best scenes, while mimicking the voices. And my uncles were blown away by it. So, by the time we walked back to The Bottom, my uncles would have me redo the scenes with my voices for their friends. So, I’ve been retelling stories my whole life.”

When movie theaters started building multiplexes that featured as many as four to eight screens, Tyree found himself engaged in what he calls “movie marathons”, where he would pay for one movie, synchronize the start and end times, and sneak into three and four different screens for a full day of movie watching.

“My friends in Mt. Airy thought I was crazy,” Tyree reflects with a laugh. “They didn’t have the attention span to watch that many movies at one time, but I did, because I had been raised on it. Then we would go to the parties in Mt. Airy, West Oak Lane and Germantown, and I’d tell the stories of everything that went down, because I had a knack for details like that. That’s how I became a writer, not through reading books, but from watching movies, television and the stuff of real life.”

STAY TUNED for a full Film Page as soon as Tyree and Hot Lava Entertainment are able to break in with a major film after creating two small budget movies, The Lure of Young Women in 2006 (TBA for future release), and Monologues produced in 2020 (Now streaming on Amazon Video Direct).

my books

Omar Tyree did not think about writing books for a living until his freshman year of college at the University of Pittsburgh, where he ran track with dreams of walking onto the Pitt Panthers football team.

“Again, dude, I was a jock. I wasn’t sitting around reading books and whatnot. But once I found that you can make a living from telling stories, I went in that direction with the skills to do it,” Tyree reflects.
